Three FINS meets, ice cream/movie night

School’s out! Let’s dance! … And eat ice cream! And watch a movie! Friday is all about celebrating the end of the school year! Get to the pool at 6 pm for the ice cream social. We’ll spin music from this century and invite all to enjoy some delicious ice cream treats! Then, grab a seat in the Pavilion for a screening of “The Greatest Showman” starring Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and Zendaya. Worth noting, Friday is a 10 pm closing night!

  • Ice Cream and music — 6-8 pm — We need your help. VOLUNTEER
  • “Greatest Showman” — 8-10 pm — The Pavilion is reserved at 7 pm.

Pool use during FINS home meets … When RCP hosts a swim meet, the entire pool is always closed for regular use. These events involve a lot of people, both from our pool and from the pools that come to compete against us. Parking, bathhouse use and seating all are at capacity. Lifeguards are not in place to help monitor recreational swimming. Every space is needed to put on these events, including the baby pool area which often is where we set up a hospitality zone.

When the dive team hosts a meet, we’ll close the diving well and may need to reserve the surrounding area for judges and dive families.

For this week, we have three home meets which affect pool use. All of these times are estimates:

  • Wednesday night, June 12 — B Meet against CCRA: The pool closes around 4:30 pm.
  • Saturday morning, June 14 — A Meet against Somerset: The pool opens around Noon or as soon as the meet is over.
  • Sunday afternoon, June 15 — Dive Meet against Glenwood: The diving well is reserved at 2:30 pm. until the meet ends.

Pasta party for swim/dive … Speaking of the FINS, the weekly Friday night pasta continues this week in the grill area. This team-building event is always a great way to cap off a hard week of practice. While the buffet is only meant for FINS (swim and dive) members, pool patrons can still use the grills while the party is going on.

Early bird starts next week … Lap swimmers (adults only) are invited to get in some early-morning exercise every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (6:30-8 am) between June 17-August 23. Please sign in when you arrive and be prepared to share lanes. As for the morning Masters Classes, as of press time, I’m unsure of the status but will fill you in when I hear anything!

Hours of operation … Now that MCPS school is out, starting on Monday, June 17, the pool is open for general use most days from 10 am – 9 pm (see above for exceptions).

Volleyball seminar was a smash! … A hearty thank you to Emma, Audrey, Fiona and Ruby for hosting the volleyball seminar last Thursday. The BCC athletes did a great job introducing the sport and explaining proper technique and strategy. If you weren’t able to attend, there’s a second one on Thursday, June 20, at 6:30 pm. This is for kids AND adults so if you’ve always wanted to learn, come on down to the court!

Trivia team takes the lead … Finally, here’s a tip of the cap to “Milton’s Pandas,” winners of the first Trivia Night last Thursday. We look forward to seeing them try to make it two in a row at the next round on Saturday, July 13!

Diving into Summer

Volleyball seminar, trivia night

Volleyball seminar is tonight! Want to learn the basics of how to play volleyball, from how to set to how to spike? Then come down to the court at 6:30 pm. Instructors from the BCC volleyball team will give you a no-pressure introduction to this fun sport. This is open to anyone 13 years and up, and adults encouraged to attend. If you can’t make this one, we’ll have a second seminar on Thursday, June 20!

A message for the dive team families … The deadline to register for the swim team is fast approaching, so take a moment to register today. Please note that a late fee of $20 per swimmer will be assessed after June 7, and registration will be closed at 10 am on June 14.

And please visit https://rockcreekdive.swimtopia.com/ to learn about the dive team and to register your child. If your child wants to try the team, register them and then you can send them to practice. If it doesn’t work for them, let us know by June 10 and we will issue you a refund of the $100 registration fee (but not the $15 insurance fee). Email Dawn and Katie, the reps, here: divereps@rockcreekpool.com. Let’s Go FINS!

Social events coming up … Make sure to check out the nifty social calendar on display at the pool for a complete listing of the 2019 events! Our next official activities are:

  • Trivia Night — Friday, June 7 — Join Quizmaster Bryan McCann for a fun evening of questions and answers. Starts promptly at 6:30 pm.
  • School’s Out Ice Cream Social and “Greatest Showman” — Friday, June 14 — This one needs volunteers: SIGN UP
  • Karaoke — Saturday, June 22
  • Games Night — Saturday, June 29

Tennis, anyone? … Please join us for friendly pick-up doubles tennis Monday nights, 6.30 pm (adults only). E-mail tennis@rockcreekpool.com to be added to the mailing list (as times may vary during the year).

Some administrative tasks …

  • Make sure your family has current photos on file.
  • Daily Guest Passes must be bought in advance.
  • Review the Rules & Regulations. Here’s one more — Parking Regulations:
    • Members and guests are not to use curbside parking along Grubb Road.
    • Members and guest must park their vehicles in the lined spaces provided in the paved lower level of the RCP property.
    • Parking in the upper lot is in designated parking spots only.
    • The speed limit in the parking lot is ten (10) mph.
    • All bicyclists must use the designated bicycle parking area. Bicycles may not be ridden inside the fenced pool area.

What the frequency, Kenneth? … Here are the hours of operation for Friday, June 7-Thursday, June 13:

  • Friday: 3:30 pm – 9 pm
  • Saturday: 10 am – 9 pm
  • Sunday: 10 am – 8 pm
  • Monday-Thursday: 3:30 pm – 8 pm

Keep an eye on the skies … Summer invariably brings late-afternoon storms and other weather that could affect our schedule. While light rain may not close the pool, please note that each time the lifeguards even hear thunder, they must evacuate the pool and the surrounding area for 45 minutes. Please listen to them and follow their instructions as we all want everyone to stay safe!

If you are on the swim and dive teams, the coaches or reps will let you know if practice is suspended or cancelled due to weather.

And you can always call the front desk (301-585-1185) to find out the pool’s status. That’ll be more reliable than waiting for me to update the pool’s website.

lifeguards!

Pool opens Friday; Valentine Slim/BBQ on Memorial Day

Greetings, RCP members! This is your News of the Week. Here’s what’s happening at the pool …

Much like Max Scherzer and the Nationals pitching staff reporting to camp signals the start of Spring, nothing says “Summer is here!” like Max McGervey and the hard-working Rock Creek Pool lifeguards scrubbing down the deck chairs! Thank you lifeguards!

AND NOW, HERE WE ARE … The pool officially opens Friday, May 24, at 3:30 p.m.! Enjoy a dip in the pool and then at 7 p.m. it’s the Welcome Back Happy Hour! Hang out in the grill area and enjoy drinks and apps. Catch up with old friends and make some new ones.

Memorial Day is packed! … We have a full day of fun planned at the pool this holiday.

  • Cookout (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.) — One complimentary lunch package per member. We’ll have hamburgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs ready to devour.
  • Live music by Valentine Slim (4 p.m. – 7 p.m.) — $5 bottomless cup for beer/wine.
  • Sports introductory meetings (swim team 4-4:30 p.m. and dive team 4:30-5 p.m.) — You’ll also hear about tennis lesson opportunities!

Volunteers needed … our events need your help in order to run smoothly, especially the big ones! Please volunteer an hour of your time this Monday. We need grillers, servers, and set up and clean up crews. It doesn’t take much if a bunch of us chip in. Thank you!

Tennis, anyone? … Please join us for friendly pick-up doubles tennis Monday nights, 6.30 p.m. (adults only). E-mail tennis@rockcreekpool.com to be added to the mailing list (as times may vary during the year).

Swim team families — especially families new to the FINS — are encouraged to read Summer Swim 101 and Fins FAQs on the team website prior to Monday’s meeting.

Swim practice will begin at 5 p.m., Tuesday May 28, and will include a mandatory swim test for all 8-under swimmers who did not compete in meets last summer. The swim test will allow the coaches to make initial assignments to Future Fins, pre-team or swim team, and specific details will be sent in the coming days directly to those families with 8-under swimmers who need to be tested. The full summer practice schedule can be found here.

Finally, the June 7 deadline to register for the swim team is fast approaching, so please register your swimmers today! Please note that a late fee of $20 per swimmer will be assessed after June 7.

Fun with the Fins Dive Team on Memorial Day … Come to the diving well around 3 p.m. to meet Assistant Coach Emma Gold, learn about the dive team, see some diving, and have a popsicle (it is Monday Funday, after all). Anyone who is a diver, was a diver or wants to find out what it’s all about (no experience necessary) is welcome! Questions? Email divereps@rockcreekpool.com. Let’s Go FINS!

Social Calendar is set … Take a stroll past the water fountain and check out the 2019 social calendar. Upcoming events in June include:

  • TRIVIA — Friday, June 7
  • SCHOOL’S OUT MEGA-PARTY (Ice Cream/Teens Pick the Music and “The Greatest Showman”) — Friday, June 14
  • KARAOKE — Saturday, June 22
  • GAME NIGHT — Saturday, June 29

Some administrative tasks …

  • All members (adults and kids) should have a current photo as part of their electronic ID.
  • Buy your Daily Guest Passes in advance at the website.
  • Know the Rules! Review the Rules & Regulations. Here’s one more to remember: Kids have to be potty-trained before they can enter the main pool. No exceptions!

Pool opens Memorial Day weekend

Well, as we expected, the pool is officially opening FRIDAY, MAY 24. At this point, we’re in the final stretch but having the extra week will allow us the time to get it just right. Here’s where we are and what’s left to be done:

  • The new sod is in place but we are fixing a few more grading and drainage issues.
  • The chairs are out of the bathrooms but we still plan to replace the women’s room toilets.
  • Much of new furniture arrived (see Bryan McCann’s photo) but it needs to be assembled.
  • The new doors are on but we need to paint and install the hardware.

Some administrative tasks … When you come to the pool for the first time this season, you may be asked to update your photo. All members (adults and kids) should have a current photo as part of their electronic ID.

Also, remember we can’t accept any payments at the front desk. If you need Daily Guest Passes, purchase them in advance at the website.

Finally, we like to keep things fun and casual at RCP, but there are certain rules we need to enforce in order to keep everyone safe. This is a great time to review the Rules and Regulations. A few line items to remember:

  • Running on the pool deck, pushing, wrestling, fighting (in or out of the swimming pool), etc., are forbidden.
  • Don’t bring glass to the pool. Except for eyeglasses, glass of any type (bottles, containers or receptacles) is prohibited.
  • Birthday parties and other special events must be scheduled and approved in advance.

Don’t forget …

… Memorial Day Cookout needs you … Volunteer an hour of your time on Monday, May 27, so we can throw an awesome BBQ!

… Valentine Slim music night … And don’t forget Valentine Slim performs 4-7 p.m. that same evening. $5 bottomless cup for beer/wine.

… Water aerobics classes start June 18 … Session One is SOLD OUT and so register to grab one of the few spots left for Session Two!

… Summer tennis sessions begin June 17 … Registration is open for a variety of classes for juniors and adults.

… Fins swim to fight cancer … We’re dedicating Friday morning, July 12, to finding a cure. To learn more, and to donate, visit the Swim Across America team page.

If you are a FINS swim or dive family … Visit the team’s websites at rockcreekswim.swimtopia.com and rockcreekdive.swimtopia.com, respectively. Here’s how you reach the team reps and coaches:

Memorial Day 2019

New FINS websites, Valentine Slim performs Memorial Day

Greetings, RCP members! This is your News of the Week. There’s a lot going on, so let’s dive right in …

Work continues on the pool grounds … This week we focused on improved grading to help mitigate standing water. Sod is being/was laid on Wednesday to the areas that needed the most work. We are also extending the fence of the baby pool to include the grass area out back. Georgetown Aquatics began adding our “swim” water back to the pool. With that said, we still have a lot of loose ends to tie up before we open and it’s very likely we’ll push our opening to Friday, May 24. We’ll make the official call next week after we evaluate what else needs to be done after this weekend.

If you are a FINS swim or dive family … Be sure to log into their new websites. The teams are now at rockcreekswim.swimtopia.com and rockcreekdive.swimtopia.com, respectively. Also, we’ve standardized our email addresses for each group of reps and coaches. Here’s how you reach them:

Don’t forget, registration for both teams is happening now. Visit their sites to sign up!

Deep-water aerobics registration is almost closed … Session One of the water aerobics classes is SOLD OUT! Session Two (July 16-Aug-6) has only a few spots left. So don’t delay if you were thinking of attending! Sign up!

Memorial Day Monday will be a full-day event this year … Along with the morning volleyball tournament and afternoon BBQ, we’re thrilled to have honky-tonk rocker Valentine Slim closing out the day on the Pavilion Stage. Slim and the boys will perform rockabilly, country and surf classics and forgotten gems. It’s a perfect soundtrack for the start of summer. His dynamic show will run from 4-7 p.m. We’ll offer $5 bottomless cup for beer/wine, so bring your dinner and enjoy the music!

Speaking of Memorial Day, we need you! … As with all of our RCP events, we can’t pull it off without members giving us a hand. Please review the volunteer sign-up form and commit an hour or two of your day to help us out. We need grillers, servers, preppers and clean-up … “crew-ers.”

The social calendar is nearly set … We’re putting the final touches on the 2019 social event poster (look for it on the cork board by the water fountain). The SC crew (Kelly Briscoe, Joel Rubin, Kate Elliott, Bryan McCann, Andrew Collard and yours truly) hope there’s a little something for everyone. For the start of the season, here’s a brief rundown so you can save the dates:

  • Monday, May 27 — BBQ and Live Music with Valentine Slim
  • Saturday, June 1 — Move Night and Happy Hour
  • Friday, June 7 — Trivia Night
  • Friday, June 14 — School’s Out Ice Cream Social
  • Saturday, June 22 — Karaoke!

Photographers needed … I’d like to add a little visual flair to these emails and highlight the fun atmosphere at Rock Creek Pool. If you are a photo-bug and want to share an RCP moment — FINS in action, an idyllic summer day, karaoke shenanigans, lallygagging in the baby pool — email a copy to me. I’ll try and use as many as I receive. Here are a few guidelines:

  • Email communications@rockcreekpool.com
  • Horizontal (landscape) orientation is best
  • Make sure to give the photographer full name credit.
  • Describe the subject in the photo (“here’s a shot of Jane Smith dancing at last night’s Valentine Slim show, which was awesome, by the way.”)
New steps!

Construction update, swim team website

It’s the first week of May which means we are in the final stretch before the start of the season! There is a TON of activity happening in these final weeks …

April was particularly busy for modernization and repair work. All the old concrete that was removed to access the leaks, address standing water, and bring our electrical bonding up to code has been replaced. That means the pool deck is fully operational. Plus, the front steps and sidewalk to the bridge are all new! The wider, higher profile should drain better and prevent standing water or mud. And yes, the stairs will have new railings on both sides! Those should be installed by mid-May.

Things that you might not notice: we’ll have new commercial grade water heaters and bathhouse doors (no more rust piles at the bottom). The heaters were replaced on April 30 and the doors are being installed this week.

There’s more coming and we’ll fill you in as we check them off the punch list!

Attention FINS swimmers and parents … swim team rep Geoff Plague reports that the new team website is finished! It looks amazing and very nicely organized. Swim team registration is open ($155 for the first family swimmer, and $110 for sibling swimmers). The deadline to register is June 7. The 2019 season will kick off with an introductory team meeting on Memorial Day afternoon, with evening practice beginning the next day — Tuesday, May 28. Go FINS!

Be on the lookout for a familiar face at the pool this season. We’re happy to to announce that former FINS coach Dale Lewis is taking on the pool manager duties this season. You’ll see him supervising the lifeguards and making sure everything is running smoothly. Welcome back, Dale!

ICYMI …

Water aerobics classes start June 18Register now as spots are filling up! Deep-water aerobics classes are a fantastic way to stay in shape while also having fun with other pool members. (NOTE: You have to be logged into the site in order to see the registration page).

Fins swim to fight cancer … We’re dedicating the morning of Friday, July 12, to finding a cure. Swim team, Dive team and ALL pool members are invited to join us in raising money for Swim Across America and participating in the morning swim. To learn more, and to donate, visit the Swim Across America team page.

And, musically talented kids and teens … don’t forget to start practicing those three-chord classics and sign up for the RCP Music Festival on Sunday, August 18! If you, or someone you know, puts the “rock” in Rock Creek Pool, email me at communications@rockcreekpool.com!

RCP News -- 042519

Dues are due, water aerobics and Fins swim to fight cancer

Greetings and salutations, Rock Creek Pool! The days are counting down to the start of the season and many of us are already working hard behind the scenes. Here’s a brief rundown on what’s in the works for the 2019 season!

Five days left to pay your dues on time … If you haven’t done so already, make sure you take a moment to pay for the coming season! The deadline to pay on time is Tuesday, April 30. The Equity Members and Seniors who don’t pay will be assessed a $50 per month late fee, and Waitlist-Summer Swim families will lose their spot. Unfortunately, we can’t make any exceptions. So please don’t wait until the last minute, remember to take care of this!

Aren’t sure if you’ve paid your dues already? Log into the RCP website to manage your account — it’ll tell you right there.

Water aerobics classes start in June — Register now as space is limited! Instructor Shelley Milan is offering RCP full and Summer members weekly water aerobics classes starting June 18. Deep-water aerobics classes are a fantastic way to stay in shape while also having fun with other pool members. Shelley says the classes will use a variety of motions including water running, abdominal work and toning exercises. Now, in order for these classes to happen, we need a minimum of 6 members to sign up. But to keep the classes manageable, there is a cap of 12 attendees per session. Finally, a special “thank you” to member Adria Zeldin who first suggested that we look into setting this up!

The Details

  • What: Deep-water aerobics
  • When: Tuesdays, 9-9:50 a.m.
    • Session 1: June 18, June 25, July 2 & July 9
    • Session 2: July 16, July 23, July 30 & Aug. 6

  • Registration Page

Fins swim to fight cancer … We’re very proud to let you know the RCP Fins are joining the fight against cancer. Every 15 minutes, 50 Americans are diagnosed with cancer. Everyone knows someone affected by cancer and we will dedicate our Friday, July 12, morning to finding a cure. Swim team, Dive team and ALL pool members are invited to join us in raising money for Swim Across America and participating in the morning swim. We will have activities everyone can participate in and the event will coincide with our annual team pancake breakfast open to all participants. To learn more, and to donate, visit the Swim Across America team page.

The Details

Your friendly-neighborhood Social Gang is brewing up some fun for the summer … The calendar will be finalized and announced in the coming weeks, but here’s a sneak peak of what’s on tap:

  • We’re finalizing plans to have honky-tonk rocker Valentine Slim kick off the season with a special Memorial Day performance! Slim and his musical cohorts are fixin’ to play an early evening performance so make sure to set your dinner plans accordingly!
  • For the competitive members out there, we’re offering several evenings of both Trivia AND traditional Games. Look for more info soon!
  • And for the kids, keep Friday, June 14, free for the “End of School” ice cream social/dance night!

Speaking of kids, are you in a band or just like to perform as a solo act? Would you like to play a few songs as part of an afternoon celebration of music? This summer, we’re holding the first Rock Creek Pool Junior Music Festival (real name pending).

We want to see our younger pool members (and their band mates) shine on the Pavilion stage. More information will come soon, but if you know someone who would put the “rock” in Rock Creek Pool, then email me at communications@rockcreekpool.com.

The Details

  • What: RCP Music Festival
  • When: Sunday, August 18, time TBD
  • Where: RCP Pavilion Stage
  • Who can sign up: Open to anyone 18 and younger. At least one performer per act should be an RCP member.
